There. I've said it. Let's talk about it.
I have skills, I have development and competition experience at the academic level, but there's no studio or dev shop experience on my resume. Unfortunately my work experience is the type of retail and fast-food experience common for people my age to help pay your way though school instead of setting you up for a career after you're done.
"So why no industry experience? No Internships, No Summer Jobs?" you ask? Well, the most honest truth is that I tried but tried the wrong way. It took me too long to realize I had the wrong approach. In my earlier years I relied too hard on university-sourced internship or co-op opportunities that never materialized; I was too particular about applying for a specific type of job instead of broad experience; I believed too much in being told reaching out should be replaced by customizing my resume for HR AI-bots; I was naive thinking it was all about finding a job with a major studio and became dismayed reading about rounds of layoffs; I didn't think to thoroughly explore all the local and small studio opportunities out there.
I lacked the direction and mentoring so desperately needed by a newcomer to our industry.
Now I'm reaching out, making calls (and not just emailing), developing this showcase site, and getting myself more (like attending GDC 2025 in San Francisco), all to try to get a foot in the door so I might one day establish a career in the Games Industry.
So Why Me? Why Take a Chance?
- I am a very fast learner (needed to be in previous jobs)
- I work well under extreme amounts of pressure, be it time or limitations
- I am quite adaptable under unexpected situations, but am also good at anticipating unlikely situations and acting in a preventative manner
- I am very observant, often to analyze situations and problems for all possible solutions
A summary of my course work, skills, and specialties are below. I look forward to talking to you more about how I can help your studio in an entry level role.
